Whats going on here ?

Filed under: News and politics — Prophet of Doom @ 11:41 am

Monday morning brought with it a peice of news that came as no surprise to many, including myself. Pakistan is on a nuclear binge, and appears to be building a new plutonium reactor, according to US satellite image reports.

Tuesday morning brought in a shocking peice of news. According to Tuesday’s Washington Post, the Bush administration has admitted that it had been aware of Pakistan’s nuclear expansion plans for a long time now !! .. Well, then why wasn’t Congress told about it ? .. And why are Congressmen keeping mum about this ?

It seems to me that Congress seems to be more interested in playing around with rubbish like same-sex marriage laws, rather than more serious issues like National Security and defense … And the ruling Republican party is only too happy ….

Found this somewhere … I could identify with it so easily .. sad, but true ..

The thing that makes you exceptional, if you are at all, is inevitably that which must also make you lonely.

Presidential Profanity and Bush-Bashing

Filed under: News and politics — Prophet of Doom @ 12:08 pm

Ok c’mon we’ve all heard it … that President George W. Bush greeted the English Prime Minister with a gangsta-rap-style, “Yo !, Blair” …. and then followed it up with a friendly banter, that included the word “shit” …

So what’s the big deal about it ? …. C’mon, everybody knows that “shit” is hardly considered a profanity these days … at least in relative terms, compared to the plethora of “lovely” words that the modern linguistic universe is flush with … They say it will create a bad impact on kids watching television … watching their country’s leader utter profanities like that … I can say this with utmost confidence … the average 6-year old today knows more profanities than I did at 18 ….

I beg to differ …. It won’t create any neagtive impacts … rather, it will drill some common sense into the masses … that the President of the United States is as human as everyone else is … and speaks the same language as they do …. And there’s nothing wrong with that, especially if the President in question is a man like George W. Bush ..

Lessons we can learn from Israel

Filed under: News and politics, Rants — Prophet of Doom @ 2:59 pm

For those not following the developments religiously, it all started on June 25th, 2006. Hamas kidnapped an Israeli soldier from an army outpost inside Israel, and killed two others. They demanded the release of Palestinian prisoners. Israel refused to negotiate, and demanded the release of the soldier.

On June 27th, Israel began operation Summer Rains, and invaded the Gaza strip to recover kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit and stop rocket fire from Hamas terrorists. Fierce fighting ensues, resulting in casualties on both sides.

On July 12th, Hezbollah terrorists cross the blue line border with Lebanon, attack an Israeli patrol, killing 3 and capturing 2 soldiers. Israel responds with airstrikes and missile attacks from a ship, in the process, has severed air and road links of many cities in Lebanon and has pounded Beirut airport, crippling air traffic to the capital.

Although the Lebanese government has pleaded innocence, the offensive has continued unabated, since Hezbollah terror camps and artillery are based in Lebanon. Hezbollah even has members elected in their senate.

Today on 17th July 2006, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that the fighting in Lebanon would end when the two Israeli soldiers captured by Hezbollah guerrillas were freed, rocket attacks on Israel were stopped, and the Lebanese army was deployed along the border.

And now look at how India deals with Pakistan … Our friendly neighbours who periodically send us gifts with terrorist affection – Beginning with the Mumbai bomb blasts (1993), IC 814 plane hijack (2000), Akshardam (2002), Parliment shootout (2001), then the Mumbai bus bomb blasts (2003), and now the latest 7/11 train bomb attacks in Bombay …. In each of these cases, the government, irrespective of which party is in power, has failed to do the needful to apprehend the guilty and prevent future attacks. Instead, they meekly give in to the terror attacks, encouraging more attacks in the future … Apparently the government doesn’t mind its citizens being slaughtered like sheep …

Day after day, our soldiers go missing in action at LoC, citizens get blown to pieces and all Indian leadership does is to read those silly speeches, saying “We condemn this cowardly act of terror. We express strong disapproval of our neighbouring country which provides support and encourangement to the terrorists.” …… Why don’t they just record that speech and just play it whenever needed ?

Its high time India gives a fitting reply to all these activities …. The only solution to all this is to put an end to the issue once and for all …. If a tiny country like Israel, surrounded by enemies on all sides, could fight a six-day war (1967) with four powerful nations (Iraq, Syria, Jordan and Egypt) and emerge victorious, its surely possible for us to secure victory against Pakistan and put an end to the acts of barbarism against our countrymen …

All thats required is some guts … unlike the spineless nature of every government thats been elected to date …

Of Broken Dishes ..

Filed under: Prophets' Specials, Rants — Prophet of Doom @ 10:20 am

When a dish falls, it breaks. You may glue the peices back together, but there will always be cracks visible, making the dish to be weaker than it once was.

This is how friendships and relationships work. Once a rift appears, its almost impossible to fix it, and hope that things would be just as they were before.

However, there is one caveat to this rule – Relations between people are somwhat different from dishes – they can be mended … It has to be mutual though. But most of the time, people are perfectly willing to walk away from the shattered pieces and go buy new dishes …

I never used to beleive in the dish theory, but it seems to me now that I’ve been proved wrong …

Only time can tell ..

The gin game defined

The gin game defined

The game of acquisitions and de-acquisitions works a lot like a game of gin rummy. For those who are not familiar with the game, here’s a description. And as playing card games other than poker and blackjack has suffered a long decline, I assume that many people under 40 have no or little knowledge of the game.

Basically, gin rummy (or gin) is a card game with two players. After initial cards are dealt, the play involves making “melds” and getting rid of “deadwood”. Melds are combinations of three or more cards (either cards of the same value- say deuces- or cards in the same suit that are in sequences-say the king, queen, and jack of diamonds). You win the game by being able to lay down usually two melds and having no cards left in your hand.

The play is a series of picking cards up and discarding them onto the “discard pile”. You discard what you judge to be deadwood, that is, cards that don’t fit into your potential melds. You can take a new card sight unseen from the deck, or you can pick up the top card on the discard pile.

Similarly, many companies are in a constant flurry of activity, acquiring and de-acquiring units. Each pickup is trumpeted as the perfect fit to existing lines of business, a business meld. Each discard is obviously considered deadwood, a drag on profits and not orgasmic to company success. The objective is a winning hand (though with companies the game never really ends).

The parallels are strong, but in one area they are deficient. Gin rummy players are limited to seven cards, and they can’t pick up cards that were discarded earlier in the game. But there is another game in the rummy family that comes closer to the strategies of big acquirers. Canasta, which originated in South America, and was wildly popular in the US in the middle of the last century, is gin rummy squared. It starts with a much bigger deck, including two standard 52-card decks and four added jokers. Players can pick up one card of the discard pile or the whole pile, giving often allowing them to have enormous hands with the ability to work on large melds. Canasta is a far wilder game than gin rummy, and each hand is likely to last for a long time.

We frequently see one company acquire another, and after the deal is done, sell off (discard) divisions or brands from that unit that do not fit into the core business activities of the acquirer. That, for example, fits the recent case of McClatchy Publishing, which bought all of the newspaper assets of Knight-Ridder, only to retain those papers that fit its business model and sell off all the others.

Likewise companies spend enormous amounts of time and energy developing (mostly through acquisitions) a new division, and then later decide that they’d rather spin the division off or sell it. For example, Clear Channel took great pains to dominate the pop music live concert business, buying many smaller, local companies and their concert sites, and working out long-term agreements to exclusive producer rights at other venues. Last year it spun off the business as a new company called Live Nation, seeking to boost revenue and, perhaps realizing that synergies were, in the end, elusive. Another example is the way in which companies like Citigroup and General Electric that had cobbled together significant insurance businesses, only to later sell them off to companies that were more specialist in the filed.

It’s remarkable how fast an area can be judged complementary, full of synergies, and a “bold expansion that builds on our strengths” to being “outside our core business/competencies/operations.”

One difference between the card game the acquisition game, is that in the real world almost always someone picks up the discards. Often now it is equity firms, who have assumed as role as safety-valve for the M&A markets. In most cases, the company or unit that is sold to the equity companies is available at some later time (for a higher price). They pick up and discard as well, but more an eye to radical restructuring of the discards and advantageous timing when that business is ready to be later discarded in turn. As private concerns owned by long-term investors they have the luxury of patience, something public companies are rarely allowed to have.

Conspiracy

“When you want something, all the world conspires in helping you to achieve it.” The Alchemist …… I disagree, after what happened today

Ever had one of those days when everything seems to be going against you ? Well I just had another one of those. Life has this tendency to suddenly turn things upside down just when everything seems to be fine – And reduces me to a mere spectator, as I watch the events unfold
– All I can do is wonder why things went wrong … To the point of making this the worst day I’ve ever had …

I don’t want to carry this on into a lengthy dirge, so to cut a long story short, all I can say is that me and my life are worthless ….
